Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic disease in the form of a metabolic disorder cause dysfunction of insulin-producing ability of β cells due to cell death or apoptosis. The first pro-inflammatory cytokine that acts on the pathogenesis of DMT2 is TNF-α. Tagetes erecta has the potential to reduce blood sugar levels in hyperglycemia but its ability as antiinflamatory in diabetic condition is unclear. This study aims to determine the ability of Tagetes erecta extract as antidiabetic and TNF-α lowering effect in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Twenty-five rats were divided into two groups as follows: a first group of five rats as normal groups, a second group of twenty rats as a diabetic groups induced with alloxan. The twenty rats in diabetic group (blood glucose ≥126mg/dL) then devided into four group as follow: Tagetes erecta extract of doses 25mg/kgBW (n=5), doses 50mg/kgBW (n=5), and doses 75mg/kgBW (n=5) intraperitoneally. Statistical test results showed that administration of Tagetes erecta extract significantly reduced glucose in alloxan-induced diabetic rat (p<0.05). In conclusion, Tagetes erecta extract have beneficial results on antidiabetic and proinflamatory cytokine TNF-α lowering effect at highest doses of 75mg/kgBW. Keywords: Tagetes erecta, Antidiabetic, TNF-α.
